In late 2006, thinking we were doing a good thing, we began feeding our cats a bit of wet food as a supplement. The oldest was getting a little underweight, and the vet thought it might help bulk her up. For the others, it was a treat. This afternoon, Nikita left us at the tender age of 12.

As the youngest of the group to be poisoned, it was not surprising that Nikita lasted the longest. But her litter mates are still thriving in other homes, and she had a far shorter life than her adopted feline family. At first, she seemed relatively unaffected, but she took a turn for the worse after Q passed away. He looked almost identical to her mother cat, and we’re convinced that she woke up after the ride to our house and thought, “Wow, ma, you've grown!" Q was fine with this, grooming her, letting her sleep tucked into his belly even when she was almost as big as him. His death affected her personality; I’m not sure she ever stopped grieving.

In her last year, Nikita took three medications twice a day. She ranged in weight from just under 5 to a maximum of nearly 7 lbs, after spending most of her life twice that size. To keep her healthy, we not only fed her a limited ingredient diet (the novel protein was easier on her system), but also a food for cats in acute medical crisis.

But before all that happened, Nikita was a terror in the best kind of way. She was named “Spock” by the friends whose cat queened her. This was because she had a triangular face and gawky, pointed ears to go with a healthy smattering of spots. But we wanted an X-Files cat, so we named her “Frohike” to match her wild coat and rimmed eyes. That lasted until her first vet appointment when we learned that HE was a SHE. After tossing around “Scully,” “Xena: Warrior Kitten” and a few other equally wrong names, we landed on “Nikita.” La Feline Nikita was a huntress with a soft side, scaling the scratching post with a howl of kitten determination, then scampering off to her double life as an average, everyday puss. It was perfect.

Nikita earned many other names as time went on: Nikitakeet, Mouser Mecha Brat Cat, Mouser, Brat Cat, Bratling, Box Cat, KiKi, KiKi Bear, Bear Cat, and Baby Girl. Later on, she was also dubbed: The Monitor, The Supervisor, Head Gray, Crochety, Little Bony, and Granny. She never lost her sense of humor, tolerating the newbies as we adopted them, even – eventually – joining in the cuddle puddle (but, oh, they had to curry favor with her for months before she deigned). She ruled the roost from high points like the entertainment center, and from low points like the kitty hammock (HERS, TYVM) and whatever box she could get into. She played fetch, though it was sometimes abbreviated to “throw.” She was the cat who assisted me most in the bathroom, be it ensuring I never peed alone, or holding down my PJs while I showered (she also liked to lick my toes dry - weirdo!). She was also a most excellent Nikita Harp long before a couple of engineers on YouTube dubbed it "Corporal Cuddling."

Nikita never minded having her intolerance of cuddling exploited for humor. She gave as good as she got, especially with our friend Susan (they were best bitching buddies). I chose this picture as Nikita's memorial shot because it sums that up so perfectly. The "ewww" on her face isn't an accident, nor did Nick shed a single drop of blood. Though I did carefully examine the mirrors for fur-oriented retaliation the next few times I changed the lens...

Nikita, sweetie, I know Q has already found you, and you are curled up against his belly, purring away while MayDay and Bassie watch over you both. Peace be yours tonight, baby girl.
